Today is National Grilled Cheese Day! According to grilledcheesery.com, variations of Grilled Cheeses can be traced as far back as the Romans, but it wasn’t until the 1920’s that the Grilled Cheese we know and love today was created. It started out as an open-faced sandwich with grated American cheese, then to make it a more filling meal a second piece of bread was added, forming the Grilled Cheese that we enjoy now. During the Great Depression, the Grilled Cheese prospered because of the affordability of the ingredients and the ability to fill an empty stomach for hours. It’s fame continued to grow during World War II where it became a favorite among the Allied Forces. Today, there are many different forms of Grilled Cheeses and you can order them as a meal almost anywhere, from the local Deli to a 5 Star Restaurant.
